First Karori Scout Group

Welcome to 1st Karori Scout Group

Who are we?

1st Karori are a scout group in Karori, Wellington. We have one Kea group, two Cub packs, two Scout troops and one Venturer unit.

We are based in the Pipitea (Wellington Zone) which is part of the Lower North Island Region and are part of the New Zealand Scouts Association (Scouts Aotearoa).

1st Karori Scouts are one of the larger groups in the country with over 180 members within the group. It is all possible thanks to the great generosity of our kaiārahi / leaders who give up time out of their busy schedule to run the group.

We give all our members, from Keas right through to the Venturers and even the leaders, the following skills:

  • Outdoor activities, bushcraft and adventure

  • Teamwork and communication

  • Respect for the environment

  • Leadership and resilience

  • Community participation

We also give Venturers the option of doing the Duke of Edinburgh Hillary award and the Queens Scout award (the highest honour in scouting).

Scouting Aotearoa is the national organisation that governs scouting in New Zealand. They decide what uniforms will look like, what the requirements for badges are and they liase with World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM). They also assist with organising the zone events and are responsible for national events such as the scout schools and jamboree. You can find more info on their website.

What do we do?

Each group usually has a weekly meeting at the local scout hall and on top of that, some groups may go away at weekends for camps and tramps. The Venturer unit also go on an annual summer tramp or Wanganui river canoe trip and an annual trip down to the local scout hall in Methven, Cantebury to ski at Mount Hutt. The senior scouts and Venturers also do two annual trips to the scout lodge at Mt Ruapehu

Scouts is all about fun, challenges and adventure.

We are New Zealand's biggest mixed youth organisation. We change lives by offering 6- to 26-year-olds fun and challenging activities, unique experiences, everyday adventure and the chance to help others so that we make a positive impact in our communities.

Scouts helps children and young adults reach their full potential. Scouts develop skills including teamwork, time management, leadership, initiative, planning, communication, self-motivation, cultural awareness and commitment. We help young people to get jobs, save lives and even change the world.

What do Scouts do?

Scouts take part in activities as diverse as kayaking, abseiling, expeditions overseas, photography, climbing and caving. As a Scout you can learn survival skills, first aid, be part of a stage show, or even learn how to fly a plane. There’s something for every young person. It’s a great way to have fun, make friends, get outdoors, express your creativity and experience the wider world.

What do volunteers do?

This everyday adventure is possible thanks to our adult volunteers, who support Scouts in a wide range of roles from working directly with young people, to helping manage a Group, to being a National Council member. We help volunteers get the most out of their experiences at Scouts by providing opportunities for adventure, training, fun and friendship.

Our internationally recognised training scheme for volunteers means that adults get as much from Scouts as young people. Our approach focuses on what you want to get out of volunteering with Scouts, while respecting how much time you can offer. Over 90% of Scout volunteers say that their skills and experiences have been useful in their work or personal life.
