1st Karori is a scout group in Karori, Wellington. We have one Kea group, two Cub packs, two Scout troops and one Venturer unit.
We are based in the Pipitea (Wellington Zone), part of the Lower Nower Island Region and members of the Zealand Scouts Association (Scouts Aotearoa). Scouts Aotearoa is the national organisation that governs scouting in New Zealand, develops the national youth programme, and manages national events and national schools.
1st Karori Scout Group is one of the largest in the country, with over 180 members.
This is all possible due to the generosity of our adult members who volunteer time to run and deliver the programme. Our youth learn the following skills:
Outdoor activities, bushcraft and adventure
Teamwork and communication
Respect for the environment
Leadership and resilience
Community participation
We also give Venturers the option of doing the Duke of Edinburgh Hillary award and the Queens Scout award (the highest honour in scouting).
Each group usually has a weekly meeting at the local scout hall, and on top of that, some groups may go away on weekends for camps and tramps. Our older youth also go on a multiday annual summer tramp and a Wanganui river canoe trip, plus we run a yearly week-long skiing trip to Mount Hutt Skie field. Our senior scouts and Venturers also do two annual skiing trips to the scout lodge at Mt Ruapehu
We are New Zealand's most prominent mixed youth organisation. We change lives by offering 6- to 26-year-olds fun and challenging activities, unique experiences, everyday adventure and the chance to help others so that we make a positive impact in our communities.
Scouts help children and young adults reach their full potential and develop skills, including teamwork, time management, leadership, initiative, planning, communication, self-motivation, cultural awareness and commitment. We help young people to get jobs, save lives and even change the world.
Scouts take part in activities as diverse as kayaking, abseiling, expeditions overseas, photography, climbing and caving. As a Scout you can learn survival skills, first aid, be part of a stage show, or even learn how to fly a plane. There’s something for every young person. It’s a great way to have fun, make friends, get outdoors, express your creativity and experience the wider world.
This everyday adventure is possible thanks to our adult volunteers, who support Scouts in a wide range of roles from working directly with young people, to helping manage a Group, to being a National Council member. We help volunteers get the most out of their experiences at Scouts by providing opportunities for adventure, training, fun and friendship.
Our internationally recognised training scheme for volunteers means that adults get as much from Scouts as young people. Our approach focuses on what you want to get out of volunteering with Scouts, while respecting how much time you can offer. Over 90% of Scout volunteers say that their skills and experiences have been useful in their work or personal life.
