1st Karori Scout Group is a wholly volunteer-based organisation, and we could not run our programmes without the amazing effort that our Kaiārahi / Leaders and other Volunteers put in to making it all happen.
To ensure we continue to provide young people with a unique opportunity to grow and develop through world-class learning programmes, we need you to join our team. There are many ways to volunteer, so choose one that suits you and experience SCOUTS for yourself.
You can volunteer as a Leader, Parent Helper or Committee Member.
Kaiārahi / Leader: Leaders often speak of how rewarding it is to volunteer with SCOUTS Aotearoa. Many parents choose to become a Leader of a Kea Club, Cub Pack, Scout Troop, or Venturer Unit, and experience SCOUTS for themselves - learning and challenging themselves as they progress through SCOUTS Aotearoa's Leader Training scheme.
Committee Member: Behind the scenes of our Group is a committee of experienced, dedicated volunteers who serve as a board. They support the operational side of our Group, helping ensure the delivery of our high-quality programmes for young people. We are always looking for more people willing to help out on our committee. Roles in the committee include:
Chairperson
Finance
Property
Membership
Aduly / Parent Help: Not every adult feels they can commit to being a leader, but parents need to help out to keep our group running and improve their child's experience at SCOUTS. All of our families are expected to help transport youth to activities, but we also need help with property maintenance, administration, and overnight activities. For those who just want to help out where they can, this is another great opportunity to volunteer.
Scouts Aotearoa is a private organisation. Membership is by mutual agreement. Volunteers joining the movement are asked to agree to six basic things:
Hold and maintain a current NZ police vetting check, which has been approved by the National Scout Centre
Read, uphold, and abide by our Values and our Code of Ethics
Uphold and abide by our Child Protection and Health and Safety policies and practices
Hold a current role and undertake the responsibilities assigned to that role
Undertake training relevant to the role and to maintain competency
Provide personal information and consent to it being stored in the National Scout Databases
We take the safety of all of our members seriously. All adults who attend overnight activities at Scouting events are required to have been approved by the Kea, Cub, Scout or Venturer leaders, be willing to follow the Code of Ethics and have completed a safety check prior to attending the event. This involves meeting with the relevant section Leader, completing the Membership Application online, and undergoing a Police check prior to attending the event. The Police check may take several weeks, and we will not allow adults without a current Police check to attend overnight activities, so we recommend that parents who want to attend overnight activities apply early.
